Rutgers Softball Takes On Long Island In Make-Up Game

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (May 3, 2010) – Stepping out of conference play, the Rutgers softball team will take on Long Island University in a single game Tuesday, May 4 at the RU Softball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
Rutgers (21-29, 7-11) defeated St. John’s 8-2 in the rubber game Sunday, May 2, taking the second-straight three-game series. Sophomore Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) sent two balls out of the park over the weekend to move within one (11) of Nikki Childress (2004) for the RU single seasonhome runrecord. Junior Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.) went 2-for-4 on the afternoon with three RBI and a run scored and the win moved RU into eighth place in the BIG EAST.
The Scarlet Knights boast a 12-5 all-time record against the Blackbirds. RU fell twice last season, 2-0, on March 20 and by a score of 4-2 on April 30.
At the plate, Brittney Lindleypaces the team with a .338 average, adding a team-best 33 RBI. The third baseman ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in slugging percentage (.654) and home runs, eighth in RBI and ninth in on-base percentage (.450).
In the circle, senior Nicole Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) leads RU with a 3.41 ERA and 10 wins. The righty has held opponents to a .251 average and fanned a career-high 112 batters.
Long Island (32-15, 15-3) is led by junior Bianca Mejia, hitting at a .410 clip with 30 RBI and 10 home runs. In the circle, Blaire Porter paces the Blackbirds with 22 wins, maintaining a 1.78 ERA. The senior has fanned 132 batters this season.
At the helm of LIU is Roy Kortmann in his 16th season. The Rider graduate boasts a 462-325-2 record with the Blackbirds, winning eight regular season Northeast Conference titles and seven NEC Tournament Championships.
