PISCATAWAY, N.J. (June 16, 2010) – Rutgers wrestling coach Scott Goodale announced Wednesday that his office has received signed letter-of-intent papers from Mario Mason of Moorestown, N.J.
Mason wrestled this past season and will transfer from Minnesota. The 149-pound grappler arrived at Minnesota after an outstanding prep career at the established Blair Academy wrestling program.
“We are obviously very excited to have someone of Mario’s wrestling abilities enter RU,” said Goodale. “He is a kid who we recruited out of high school was the No. 3 overall recruit in America as a high school senior and who has some high expectations for himself. I believe the change of atmosphere will be good for Mario, and being from New Jersey, he will certainly fit in and understand our guys and this coaching staff”.
After redshirting the 2008-09 season, Mason earned an NCAA bid as redshirt freshman in 2009-10 after he posted an 19-12 overall record and placed fifth at the Big Ten Championships. He went 0-2 at the NCAA Tournament, falling 1-2 in tie-breaker one to Eric Albright of Pittsburgh and 2-5 to Donald Vinson of Binghamton.
During his Blair Academy career, he was ranked the third-best high school wrestler in the country at 145 pounds by Amateur Wrestling News. He was a four-time All-American and state champion and part of high school national high school championship teams in 2005 and 2006.
