Catching Up With Brittney Lindley
Jul 22 | Softball
Rutgers softball third baseman Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.) had a breakout season in 2010, smashing the single season home run record with 13 blasts on the season. The rising junior led the team in averae (.356), runs (36), RBI (37), and slugging percentage (.691), but is still hitting the batting cages with her dad this summer. Lindley took time out of her busy summer schedule to catch up with Athletic Communications assistant Alli Miller.
Alli Miller: What classes are you taking this summer?
Brittney Lindley: Right now, I’m taking some of my harder classes to try and get them out of the way because it’s a little toned down in the offseason and I get to relax. I’m finishing my Calculus 4 class and then I’m just taking Microeconomics and Dynamics. My major is environmental engineering.
AM: What do you want to do with that after you graduate?
BL: I want to clean up the environment. I’m not really sure how yet. I can go into air pollution or water pollution.
AM: How have you worked on your game in the offseason?
BL: I’ve been working out a lot. I just got done working out, actually. I go out on the field with some of my teammates and when I go home (to Cicero, N.Y.) I still like to go to the field with my dad. That’s something we’ve always done.
AM: What are you doing for fun?
BL: I went down to the beaches. We also went out to a lake close to campus. That was fun. It had water slides and everything. We went to Six Flags and went on one of the fastest roller coasters there. I like to ride in the front of the roller coaster. One of the water slides we went on was pitch black, so you can’t see anything and it was pretty scary.
AM: What has been your focus this offseason?
BL: I’ve been focusing on relaxing at the plate. In the offseason, you’re not hitting every day, so when you go to practice you’re not always on top of the ball. I’m working on the little things, the fundamentals. I’m also working on getting faster because it never hurts to be too fast.
AM: What is next year going to be like now that your sister is gone?
BL: It’s going to be different, but I’ve already done it once in high school. She’s still going to be there helping the team out, but it’s definitely going be weird not having her out there pitching for us. Maybe I’ll be able to relax a little bit more because she’s still my sister, so if she had a bad game, I care but now I don’t have to worry about that.
AM: What was your most memorable moment this season ?
BL: My favorite part of the season was when we found out that we got into the BIG EAST Tournament. After winning the game against Pittsburgh, I was just happy we won that game. That was the last thing we could do to get us into the tournament. I don’t know what would have happened if South Florida had won, but I already expected to get in. That was a great moment, everyone was so happy.
AM: What have you done to lead the other girls this summer?
BL: I’ve sent a few text messages to make sure everyone is working out on the field. I think when summer comes around, you want to take a break but people sometimes get used to having too much fun and then they forget to get on the softball field. I’ve been their little conscious this summer.
