Phil Sellers to be Inducted into New York City Basketball Hall of Fame

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (August 23, 2010) - Phil “The Thrill” Sellers, Rutgers’ all-time leading scorer and rebounder, will be inducted into the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame on Thursday, September 23. A two-time All-American at RU, including a 1976 Associated Press First Team selection, Sellers helped the Scarlet Knights to the 1976 Final Four.

Sellers will be one of five players inducted into the prestigious 2010 class that evening at the New York City Athletic Club, along with George Johnson, Anthony Mason, Barnie Sedran and Isaac “Rabbit” Walthour. Joe Mullaney will be inducted as a coach and Teddy Jones will enter as a contributor.

Sellers’ number 12 is one of three men’s basketball jerseys (Bob Lloyd, James Bailey) retired by the State University of New Jersey. In four seasons (1972-76) he scored 2,399 points and grabbed 1,111 rebounds. A two-time Haggerty Award winner, Sellers played professionally in the NBA with the Detroit Pistons.

Sellers arrived “On the Banks” after being named a consensus scholastic All-American at Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn. As a senior at TJHS, he averaged 33.2 points and 22.6 rebounds-per-game and was named most valuable player at the Dapper Dan Classic, an all-star game for the top high school players in the country.
