Sep 26 | Women's Soccer
Villanova, Pa. (Sept. 26, 2010) –The Rutgers women’s soccer team (6-5, 1-2) fell to Villanova (6-5, 1-2) by a score of 1-0 Sunday at the West Campus Complex. Despite outshooting the Wildcats 15-10 and taking six more corners, the Scarlet Knights were unable to put the ball in the back of the net.
“We had a lot of chances in the second half,” said head coach Glenn Crooks. “The second half was a very good half. We had a couple of breakdowns that led to their goal, but there was no panic. There was always the feeling that we would get the equalizer and it never happened. We need to just keep creating opportunities and hope that our goal scorers start to connect.”
Villanova got on the board in the 36thminute, as Heidi Sabatura played the ball through to Katie Ryan at the top of the 18 yard box. Ryan beat the final RU defender, knocking the ball past freshman Samantha Perretty (Parkland, Fla.) for the score.
Redshirt senior Gina DeMaio (Parsippany, N.J.) notched five shots, including two on goal, but could not find the net. Co-captain Karla Schacher (Tofield, Alberta) tallied three shots in the match.
After an almost even first half, RU outshot VU 9-3 in the second stanza, taking six corners while the Scarlet Knights did not allow any.
The Scarlet Knights refused to quit, as they had two opportunities in the final eight minutes. DeMaio anchored two corners and sent a shot wide left in the waning minutes while sophomore Lindsey McNabb (Montville, N.J.) headed a ball just high.
In her second-consecutive start, Perretty grabbed four saves in the match, allowing the lone goal, to move to 1-1 on the season.
Rutgers returns home next weekend to take on BIG EAST American Division foes Connecticut and Providence. UConn visits Yurcak Field Friday at 7 p.m. with PC following on Sunday at 1 p.m.
