
Rutgers Volleyball Preps for BIG EAST Home Openers

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (September 29, 2010) – The Rutgers volleyball team (7-8, 0-2 BIG EAST) will open its home BIG EAST slate with matchups against Pittsburgh (6-11, 1-1 BIG EAST) and West Virginia (11-6, 1-1 BIG EAST) this weekend. The contests between Pitt and WVU mark the beginning of a five-match home stand for the Scarlet Knights at the College Avenue Gym.
For their first match of the weekend, Rutgers takes on Pittsburgh, Friday, Oct. 1, at 7 p.m. The Panthers are coming off a weekend that saw them go 1-1 against a pair of BIG EAST opponents. After downing the DePaul Blue Demons in four sets, the Panthers were swept by Notre Dame.
This season, Pitt has been lead by senior Amy Town who is averaging 3.69 kills per set, ranking her fourth in the BIG EAST.
The Panthers, who are 24-6 all-time against RU, are coached by Toby Rens who is in his third season with the program.
In their second home match of the weekend, RU faces West Virginia on Sunday, Oct. 3, at 2 p.m. The Mountaineers are coming off a weekend where they went 1-1 against BIG EAST foes Notre Dame and DePaul. WVU got swept at Notre Dame but rebounded strong downing the Blue Demons in straight sets.
For the year, WVU has been paced by junior setter Kerry Post who ranks fourth in the BIG EAST in assists per set with a 10.55 average.
The Mountaineers, who are 22-19 all-time vs. RU, are coached by Jill Kramer who is in her first season at WVU.
Last weekend, the Scarlet Knights dropped road contests to two of the preseason BIG EAST favorites, Louisville and No. 25 Cincinnati. RU was lead by sophomore Stephanie Zielinski who tallied 60 assists for the weekend, including 30 in a double-double (30 assists, 10 digs) performance against No. 25 Cincinnati.
