Rutgers Volleyball Falls at Delaware

NEWARK, Del. (September 3, 2010) – In its final matchup of the Delaware Invitational, the Rutgers volleyball team (3-3) fell 3-0 to Delaware (6-1). For the match, RU was led by senior Caitlin Saxton (Encinitas, Calif.), who tallied seven kills and nine digs, and sophomore Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) who recorded 29 assists. 

The Scarlet Knights got out to a quick lead scoring the first five points of the match but couldn’t keep up the momentum and dropped the first set, 25-21.

The second set saw RU get out to another early lead as it scored nine of the first 12 points but following a Delaware timeout the Blue Hens went on a run of their own to tie the score at 15. From there, the Blue Hens used a consistent attack to close out the second set, 25-20 and took a 2-0 lead entering the break.

Delaware came out strong after the break scoring 13 of the first 16 points in the set to build an insurmountable lead, eventually taking the set 25-16.     

The match concluded a strong Delaware Invitational for the Scarlet Knights, who went 2-1 at the Invitational. For the weekend, the Scarlet Knights were led by Emma Chyrstal (Kalamazoo, Mich.) andAlex Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) who each earned spots on the All-Tournament team.

Rutgers returns to action Tuesday, September 7, when they travel north to Newark, N.J. to take on in-state rival NJIT at 7 p.m.
