Rutgers Basketball Falls 72-57 at Miami

Coral Gables, Fla. (Nov. 15, 2011) - Despite several attempts to rally back, Rutgers (1-1) fell at Miami (2-0) by a score of 72-57 Tuesday night at the BankUnited Center. RU was led by sophomore guard Austin Carroll (Bedford, Mass.), who posted a career-high 11 points on a perfect four-of-four shooting performance from the floor.

Freshman guard Eli Carter (Willingboro, N.J.) added a career-high 10 points, as five Scarlet Knights totaled seven-plus. The Hurricanes were led by veteran guards Malcolm Grant and Durand Scott, who each poured in a game-high 19 points on a combined 12-of-26 shooting.

Sophomore forward Gilvydas Biruta (Jonava, Lithuania) controlled the glass with a game-high and personal-best 11 rebounds. Biruta added eight points and three assists on the night.

The Hurricanes shot 49.0 percent from the floor, including 10-of-23 (43.5 percent) from behind the arc. The Scarlet Knights could not find their rhythm, shooting at a .359 clip for the game.

Miami took its largest lead of the game, 46-27, with 15:18 to go in the second stanza. RU - who never led in the contest - rattled off a 15-2 run over the next 5:28 to pull within six points, 48-42. Five Scarlet Knights contributed to the run, started by Carter with back-to-back buckets and ending with Myles Mack (Paterson, N.J.) with a transition three from the wing.

Within seven and with just over three minutes remaining, Scott scored seven of the next 11 points to give the Hurricanes a 14-point advantage they would not relinquish.

The Scarlet Knights fell behind early, as the Hurricanes went on a 13-2 run in the first half to stretch a three-point lead to a 20-6 advantage. For the half, UM shot 56.0 percent (14-of-25) from the floor, including a blistering 7-of-13 from behind the arc.

After Miami took its largest lead of the first half (29-13), Rutgers responded with a 10-2 run - including five points from sophomore Mike Poole (Rosedale, N.Y.) - to bring the score within eight, 31-23. The Hurricanes would score four of the next six points to take a 10-point cushion into the break.

Rutgers returns home Thursday, Nov. 17 for the first contest of the Cancun Challenge against NEC member Sacred Heart in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off at The RAC. The game will be streamed live on www.scarletknights.com via RVision.
