PISCATAWAY, N.J. (November 15, 2011) - No. 15/15 Rutgers women's basketball remains at the RAC for the second-straight contest for a midweek battle with Boston College on Wednesday, Nov. 16 at 7:30 p.m. The contest can be seen live on RVision, presented by AT&T with Danny Breslauer and Adam Helfgott calling the action.
The game will be broadcast live on the Rutgers Radio Network on WCTC 1450 AM with play-by-play announcer Ed Cohen and color analyst Mark Peterson. Rutgers student radio WRSU 88.7 FM will also carry the contest.
Rutgers (1-0) opened its 17th season under Hall of Fame head coach C. Vivian Stringer with a 73-70 victory over California, snapping a two-game skid to the Golden Bears. Junior Monique Oliver (Las Vegas, Nev.) and freshman Betnijah Laney (Clayton, Del.) paced RU with 18 points apiece in the win. Oliver, who shot 6-for-9 from the floor, added nine rebounds, four steals, three blocks and two assists on the day. Laney - one of five freshmen to make her collegiate debut in the season-opener - got the starting nod from Stringer and scored the most points by a freshman in her debut since Usha Gilmore's 20 points on Nov. 24, 1996.
Junior Erica Wheeler (Miami, Fla.) provided a spark off the bench, igniting the Scarlet Knights in the second half to a 19-2 run. The guard tallied 14 points on 4-for-6 shooting from behind the arc and added in a career-high six steals. Senior guard/forward April Sykes (Starkville, Miss.) chipped in 12 points, marking the fourth RU player in double-figures.
Rutgers looks to retaliate from last season's 84-75 defeat at the hands of Boston College, snapping a three-game unbeaten streak against the Eagles. RU holds a 13-9 advantage over BC, including an 8-3 mark on the Scarlet Knights' home floor.
Boston College (1-0) defeated Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday, 68-57, in its season-opener behind a solid effort from its sophomore class. Shayra Brown's career-high 19 points and seven boards led all scorers, while Tiffany Ruffin and Korina Chapman added 10 and nine points, respectively. The Eagles received 33 points from their bench and outrebounded the Knights 50-38 in the victory.
