Nov 06 | Women's Volleyball
NOTRE DAME, Ind. (November 6, 2011) - Playing on the road at a hostile Purcell Pavilion, Rutgers University volleyball could not gain any momentum against the University of Notre Dame, falling to the Fighting Irish in three sets on Sunday afternoon. ND won by the scores of 25-15, 25-11 and 25-17.
"Notre Dame came out strong today and we did not match their intensity," said head coach CJ Werneke after the match. "We did not have a good effort or mindset and really did not have a say in the matter."
Rutgers (8-21, 1-12 BIG EAST) concluded the road portion of the schedule with the match.
Junior setter Stephanie Zielinski (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) recorded her seventh-straight double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs. Zielinski leads the BIG EAST with 17 double-doubles on the season.
Defensively, sophomore Brittany Bozzini (Saratoga, Calif.) totaled 11 digs to lead the Scarlet Knights.
Notre Dame (15-9, 8-4 BIG EAST) displayed a balanced attack with 13 players seeing action in the match. Jeni Houser had a match-high nine kills in the win for the Fighting Irish who drew 990 fans to the contest.
Rutgers concludes the season next weekend at the College Ave Gym, taking on UConn (Nov. 12, 2 p.m.) and St. John's (Nov. 13, 2 p.m.). It will also be Alumni Weekend.
