Rutgers Soccer Center Back Shannon Woeller Selected to CONCACAF Roster

Vancouver, BC, Canada (December 20, 2011) - Rutgers women's soccer center back Shannon Woeller (Vancouver, BC, Canada) has been named to the 20-player roster for the upcoming 2012 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The top two teams of the continental championship will qualify for the London Olympics.
"Shannon has made such enormous strides this year with the national program," said Rutgers head coach Glenn Crooks. "Her experience at the Pan Am Games elevated her confidence, and she carried that with her into the latest camp. At Rutgers, she has grown both as a player and leader in the back and I'm happy that she can now test her skills and continue to develop through the Olympic Qualifiers."
"I am very excited to have this opportunity," said Woeller. "It's one step closer to reaching my dreams. I'm very appreciative of everyone at Rutgers that has helped me to get to where I am now. Playing in a big tournament at home, in front of friends and family, is a chance that not many people get, so that is special to me as well."
Woeller has tallied four caps over her career, earning Player of the Match honors against Argentina in the Pan American Games in October. With Rutgers, Woeller was named to the All-BIG EAST Third Team, as she saw 90-plus minutes in 14 of 15 matches she played. The center back is one of three collegiate athletes on the Canadian squad.
The 2012 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying tournament runs Jan. 19-29 at BC Place. Canada's first three matches are Jan. 19 against Haiti, Jan. 21 versus Cuba and Jan. 23 against Costa Rica. Woeller spent the last two weeks in Fullerton, Calif., on the 23-player roster for the Canadian Women's National Team December Camp in preparation for CONCACAF.
