Rutgers Tennis Splits Weekend

Washington, D.C. (April 10, 2011) – The Rutgers tennis team (14-5, 6-3) split the weekend at BIG EAST foes Georgetown and Villanova. The Scarlet Knights were edged by the Hoyas, 4-3, on Saturday at the McDonough Outdoor Tennis Courts before rallying to defeat Villanova, 7-0.
RU has won nine of its last 10 contests, as the squad heads into its Senior Day matchup with Connecticut on Wednesday.
Junior Morgan Ivey (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.) won both her bouts over the weekend, defeating Victoria Sekely of Georgetown and Allie Harding of Villanova. The junior paired with freshman Stef Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) to earn two wins at No. 3 doubles, upending Alex Sebia and Madeline Jaeger of GU and VU’s Anne Cognetti and Wesleigh Donadio.
Freshman Vanessa Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) also notched a 2-0 weekend at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. In the sixth spot on Saturday, the rookie took down Alexandra Landers 6-1, 6-4. Playing at No. 5, Petrini defeated Villanova’s Kristin Gobberg 6-0, 6-2 Sunday.
The Scarlet Knights return home for Senior Day, Wednesday, April 13 against Connecticut. The match – held at the RU Tennis Complex – will begin at 2 p.m.
