
Rutgers Softball Drops Contest at Providence, 14-11

Providence, R.I. (April 17, 2011) – Rutgers softball (18-22, 6-6) fell to Providence College (18-25, 4-10) by a score of 14-11 Sunday at Raymond Field. The Scarlet Knights were led by Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.) and Brittney Lindley (Cicero, N.Y.), who each hit a home run and combined for five RBI on the day.
Lindley started the scoring off with a two-out blast over the right field wall in the first. The long ball was Lindley’s 10th home run of the season, 24th of her career.
Providence responded in the bottom half of the inning with a three-run home run by Corinne Rubright, scoring Michelle Huber and Justine Stratton who both singled up the middle.
The Scarlet Knights used three hits and a PC error to generate four runs in the third, highlighted by a two-run home run by Craig, scoring Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) who had singled to right. Sophomore Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) pushed a single through the right side to score two more runs and put RU up 5-3.
A two-run home run by PC’s Jessie Bryant and a RU error allowed the Friars to take a 6-5 lead into the fourth. The Scarlet Knights pushed their lead to four with a two-out rally in the fourth. Loren Williams used an infield single to start the scoring barrage. Craig, Lindley and sophomore Kaci Madden (Saratoga, N.Y.) used three-consecutive doubles to take a 9-6 lead. Madden added another run, scoring on a Alicia Grosso wild pitch.
The Friars knotted the score with four runs on five hits and a RU error in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a three-run home run to left center by PC’s Kim Pelland.
PC took the lead for good in the fifth with a grand slam by Bryant, her second homer of the game. RU got a run back in the sixth, as Mikelyn Messina (Prospect, Conn.) walked and Mickenzie Alden (Spokane, Wash.) drove her in with a one-hopper in front of the center fielder.
While all three Rutgers pitchers saw action, freshman Megan Williams (Richmond, Va.) notched the start and the loss for Rutgers, allowing seven runs on six hits in three innings of work.
Rutgers steps out of conference play, facing Stony Brook in a doubleheader Tuesday, April 19. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
