Rutgers Volleyball Drops Season Opener

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (August 26, 2011) – Rutgers University volleyball opened the season falling 3-0 to Texas A&M Corpus Christi on Friday afternoon at the Sam Houston State Invitational. It was the first-ever match between the two teams.

“We had some good runs at times, but we gave up too many points and committed too many unforced errors,” said head coach CJ Werneke. “We now turn our attention to the match against Sam Houston State.”

The Scarlet Knights (0-1) will be back in action at 8 p.m. ET to face host Sam Houston State. The Bearkats defeated Texas – Pan American, 3-1, earlier today. The match will be streamed on GoBearkats.com for a charge of $8.95 for the tournament. Sam Houston State will also provide Live Stats on the same website for free.

Texas native Tiffany Regmund (College Station, Texas) led the Scarlet Knights in the matinee with a career-high eight kills to go with seven digs.

“We are expecting big things from Tiffany not only this weekend, but this season,” said Werneke. “She is our number-one outside hitter and with that comes a lot of responsibility. I thought she played a great match this afternoon.”

Senior Kallie Pence (College Station, Texas) led Rutgers on the defensive end with 14 kills while junior Stephanie Zielinski (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) put up 25 assists.

The Islanders’ (1-0) Brooke Alverson led all players with nine kills.
