Pittsburgh, Pa. (Sept. 23, 2011) – Despite an aggressive offensive output, the Rutgers women’s soccer team (6-3-1, 1-1-1) knotted Pittsburgh (1-6-4, 0-1-2), 0-0, Friday night at Ambrose Urbanic Field.
RU outshot Pitt by a 17-11 margin, including a 5-1 advantage with shots on frame. In the extra periods, the Scarlet Knights took six shots, while allowing just two. Junior goalkeeper Emmy Simpkins (Concord, N.C.) made one save in the shutout effort.
Rutgers had advantages early, taking two corners in the first two minutes and Morgan Kennedy (Wall, N.J.) was able to get a shot off, but pushed it wide.
The Scarlet Knights threatened with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. After Kennedy and freshman Amy Pietrangelo (Laval, Quebec, Canada) each rattled off shots, RU earned three corner kicks and four shot opportunities – including one blocked and two on net.
Sophomore Maria Gerew (Toms River, N.J.) and freshman Morgan Kennedy (Wall, N.J.) each earned their first starts in a Scarlet Knight uniform.
The Scarlet Knights head to No. 25/23 West Virginia Sunday for a match televised on CBS Sports Network. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. with Eric Frede and Tammy Blackburn on the call.
