PROVIDENCE, R.I. (September 26, 2011) – Facing some of the top competition on the east coast, the Rutgers University women’s tennis team won nine of 12 doubles matches and received strong play in singles at the Brown Invitational last weekend in Providence, R.I. It was the second fall event for the Scarlet Knights.
The event was team-orientated for doubles and flighted for singles play. In attendance were six of the top eight squads from last season’s final regional rankings.
“On the whole, the team played aggressive tennis and we competed very well,” said ninth-year head coach Ben Bucca. “We took from this experience of playing against the best teams on the east coast that we have to get a little better and that the only way we are going to do it is to work as hard as we possibly can in practice. At the end of the weekend the girls committed to that so we left motivated.”
Doubles was the strength for RU on the weekend, as the team won nine of 12 doubles matches. The team of sophomore Stefania Balasa (East Brunswick, N.J.) and freshman Noor Judeh (Potomac, Md.) led the Scarlet Knights with a perfect 3-0 record, with wins over Binghamton (8-5), Boston University (8-3) and Brown (8-2).
RU’s three other pairs also picked up wins over Binghamton and Boston University to contribute to the success.
In singles play, freshmen Lindsay Balsamo (Wall, N.J.) and Satreethai Sasinin (New Brunswick, N.J.) each notched two victories in three matches. Junior Michelle Green (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) also added two wins of her own.
The Scarlet Knights are next scheduled to compete at the USTA Invitational from Oct. 8-10 at the U.S. Tennis Center in Queens, N.Y.
