Rutgers Volleyball Drops to Sacred Heart
Sep 03 | Women's Volleyball
FAIRFIELD, Conn. (September 3, 2011) – After playing two five-set matches in the last 24 hours, Rutgers volleyball fell to host Sacred Heart, 3-0 (25-20, 25-22, 25-15), to complete the Sacred Heart Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The lost snapped the Scarlet Knights’ four-match winning streak.
RU (4-4) defeated Hartford on Friday and Brown earlier on Saturday to end the tournament with a 2-1 mark. Both matches went the distance.
“It was a long weekend and we ran out of gas towards the end,” said head coach CJ Werneke of the loss to SHU. “We had some good runs, but Sacred Heart is a good team and they executed better than we did throughout the match. It was still a good weekend, however, as we were able to pick up two wins against quality opponents.”
Juniors Alex Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) and Stephanie Zielinski (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) were the named to the All-Tournament Team after the match, as voted upon the coaches in the event. Jones recorded 58 kills (4.46 k/s) while Zielinski put up 131 assists (10.08 a/s) and 33 digs (2.54 d/s) in the three matches.
Jones extended her streak of reaching double-digit kills to seven matches by picking up 10 markers versus the Pioneers.
Kallie Pence (College Station, Texas) led the Scarlet Knights with 11 digs.
Sacred Heart (5-1) was led by Kimmee Roleder (11 kills) and Jessica Colberg (13 digs).
The Scarlet Knights will next travel to Hempstead, N.Y. to take on Hofstra on Tuesday. The first serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
