Rutgers Volleyball Tripped Up by Hofstra, 3-1

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (September 6, 2011) – Rutgers University volleyball won the first set, but could not keep the momentum, dropping on the road to Hofstra, 3-1, on Tuesday night at the Mack Physical Education Center.

“After the first set Hofstra brought it to a different level that we were not able to match,” said head coach CJ Werneke after the match. “We broke down a bit, committing too many hitting and serving errors and we were not as aggressive. The credit goes to them for stepping their game up. There were just too many breakdowns for us tonight.”

Senior Hannah Curtis (Wasilla, Alaska) led the Scarlet Knights (4-5) on offense, posting a match and season-high 17 kills on the night. Setter Stephanie Zielinski (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) recorded 37 assists.

Defensively, Kallie Pence (College Station, Texas) tallied 10 digs for Rutgers, including the 500th of her career in the first set.

Hofstra (7-0) had three players with double-digit kills.

The Scarlet Knights return home to the College Ave Gym this weekend to host the Rutgers Invitational. Binghamton, Howard and Princeton will travel to New Brunswick for the two-day round-robin tournament, starting on Friday afternoon.
