NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (Oct. 14, 2012) - Despite taking the first two sets, the Rutgers volleyball team fell to Marquette, 3-2, in the College Ave. Gym, Sunday. The Scarlet Knights suffered defeat by set scores of 25-22, 30-28, 19-25, 17-25 and 10-15. Rutgers moved to 1-10 all-time against the Golden Eagles and 5-3 at home this season.
The Scarlet Knights (16-7, 2-6 BIG EAST) compiled a .236 hitting percentage and totaled 65 kills, 63 assists, 70 digs and 6.0 team blocks. Marquette (17-3, 7-0 BIG EAST) hit .282 and recorded 71 kills, 67 assists, 85 digs and 9.0 blocks.
Senior setter Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) tallied her 17th double-double of the season with 54 assists and a team-best 17 digs. It was the ninth time this season she had 50 or more assists in a match. She now has 1,006 helpers this season and 3,919 for her career, just 11 away from taking sole possession of second place on Rutgers' all-time list.
Freshman Megan Stephenson (Burbank, Calif.) led the Scarlet Knights with a career-high 17 kills, followed by senior Kylie Orr (Kettering, Ohio), who totaled 16. Orr also notched nine digs to tie her career-high. Classmate Alex Jones (Chesapeake, Va.) recorded eight kills, giving her 239 for the campaign, her most in a single season.
Rutgers started the match with its best set of the contest, putting together a hitting percentage of .342. Down 20-19, the Scarlet Knights went on a 4-0 run highlighted by two Orr kills to go up 23-20. Orr tallied two more kills to close the set. The second stanza was back-and-forth throughout, and was tied 25-25. Orr stepped up again, notching to kills late in the second to give the Scarlet Knights the 30-28 victory.
Marquette took an early lead in the third game and Rutgers couldn't make a run. Tied 4-4 in the fourth set, the Golden Eagles went on a 5-0 run and the Scarlet Knights wouldn't close the gap. Marquette jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the deciding game and proved to be too much for Rutgers, taking the match.
The Scarlet Knights continue play on the road, facing Seton Hall on Oct. 19. Rutgers is 19-15 all-time against the Pirates
