
Rutgers Volleyball Falls in Three Sets to No. 17 Louisville

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Oct. 7, 2012) - In its first matchup against a ranked opponent this season, the Rutgers volleyball team dropped the match in straight sets to No. 17 Louisville in Louisville, Ky., Saturday. The Scarlet Knights fell by set scores of 20-25, 13-25 and 18-25.
Rutgers (15-6, 1-5) struggled to find its form on offense, putting together a hitting percentage of .000. The squad recorded 24 kills, 20 assists, 53 digs and 3.0 team blocks. The Cardinals (16-2, 5-1) hit .256, notching 44 kills, 41 assists, 55 digs and 8.0 blocks. Rutgers moved to 0-9 all time against Louisville.
The Scarlet Knights kept the opening set close, trailing by just three late, 20-23, but couldn't catch the Cardinals. In the second game, Rutgers led 11-10, but Louisville went on a 15-2 run to close it out. The Scarlet Knights fell behind early in the final set and couldn't chip away at the Cardinals' lead to fall in three games.
Senior setter Stephanie Zielinski (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) notched her 12th-straight double-double and 16th of the season with 20 assists and a team-high 13 digs. Offensively, freshmen Sarah Schmid (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) and Megan Stephenson (Burbank, Calif.) led Rutgers with seven kills each.
Louisville's Lola Arslanbekova had a match-best 20 kills and set a new school record for career kills.
The Scarlet Knights return home for "Alumni Weekend," starting with Syracuse on Oct. 12 at 6 p.m. in College Ave. Gym. The squad will then take on Marquette on Oct. 14 at 2 p.m. in its "Dig Pink" match to raise awareness and help in the fight against breast cancer.
