MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (March 20, 2012) – Rutgers University gymnastics placed 15 student-athletes on the East Atlantic Gymnastics League All-Academic team, the league announced Monday evening. The Scarlet Knights tied the University of New Hampshire for the most in the conference.
“This continues the tradition of academic excellence in the Rutgers gymnastics program,” said head coach Louis Levine. “We prioritize doing well in the classroom and I am happy that we tied for the most in the EAGL.”
Seniors Alexis Belvis (Hinsdale, Ill.) and Nicole Schwartz (Somerset, N.J.) cap off their careers having earned EAGL All-Academic honors all four years. Graduate student Leigh Heinbaugh (Sicklerville, N.J.) and juniors Madeline Meyer (Darien, Ill.), Jenna Zito (Rockaway, N.J.), Nicole Romano (Livingston, N.J.) and Emma-Rose Trentacosti (Ridgefield Park, N.J.) all appeared for the third time.
Five student-athletes made the team for the second time, including senior Melanie Brother (Crofton, Md.) and sophomores Alexis Gunzelman (Tabernacle, N.J.), Allie Ivol (Woolich Twp., N.J.), Luisa Leal (Cali, Columbia) and Alyssa Straub (Nazareth, Pa.).
Junior Danielle D’Elia (Colts Neck, N.J.), sophomore Holly Murray (Harrisburg, Pa.) and freshman Sara Skammer (Dallas, Pa.) all met the requirements for the first time.
Overall, 99 gymnasts from the eight-member EAGL earned the distinction. In order to be named, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. Freshmen are eligible if they earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the fall semester.
The All-EAGL Awards will be presented at the annual banquet on Friday, March 23 at the University of Pittsburgh, the site of this year’s EAGL Championships.
