Philadelphia, Pa. (February 20, 2013) - Despite three points apiece from midfielders Stephanie Anderson (Wading River, N.Y.) and Katrina Martinelli (Moorestown, N.J.), the Rutgers women's lacrosse team dropped an 8-7 decision at Temple on Wednesday at Geasey Field.
This marks the third-straight one-point game in the series between the two teams. Anderson and Martinelli each posted two goals and an assist for the Scarlet Knights (1-1). Temple (2-0) was paced by Rachel Schwaab with three goals.
Senior captain Lily Kalata (Nesconset, N.Y.) stopped 10 shots.
Goals in the first four minutes by Martinelli and freshman Halley Barnes (Garnet Valley, Pa.) put the Scarlet Knights up 2-0 over the Owls. Temple came within one on a goal from Molly Seefried. Rutgers regained its two-point advantage with Amanda Trendell's (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) second goal of the season.
Anderson posted her sixth goal of the season with eight minutes left in the first half before Temple's Schwaab scored two-straight and the teams headed to the locker room in a 4-4 draw.
Anderson scored and then assisted Martinelli to open up the second half and give RU a 6-4 lead. The Owls would not be quieted, posting the next four scores to take their first lead of the game, 8-6, with 7:37 to play.
Megan Clements (Pennington, N.J.) corralled a pass from Martinelli at the 1:36 mark to pull the Scarlet Knights within one, 8-7, but the Scarlet Knights could not find the tying score in the final 90 seconds.
