Rutgers Softball Defeats Maine, Iowa State

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 17, 2013) - The Rutgers softball team (10-9) defeated both Maine (3-23) and Iowa State (11-13) on Saturday in Clearwater, Fla., finishing with a 2-0 victory over the Black Bears, and a 4-2 win over the Cyclones.

In the first game, the Scarlet Knights took an early lead as Loren Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) led off the bottom of the first with a solo home run. The early momentum carried over to the second inning as Elizabeth Adams (Crystal Lake, Ill.) drove in the game's second and final run.

Dresden Maddox (Kennesaw, Ga.) pitched a complete game shutout yielding just two singles. Left fielder Chandler Howard (Wilmington, Del.) notched two hits for the Scarlet Knights.

In the win over the Cyclones, the Scarlet Knights trailed 2-1 entering the top of the seventh. Rutgers loaded the bases with one out as Williams singled to center, and drove in two runs to give the Rutgers its first lead of the game, 3-2.

Two batters later, Ashley Bragg (Middletown, Del.) walked with the bases loaded, forcing in a run to cap off the scoring at 4-2.

RU pitcher Alyssa Landrith (Vacaville, Calif.) threw a complete game, surrendering no earned runs.

Rutgers takes the field Sunday, March 17 in Clearwater, Fla. at 9:30 a.m. to face Boston College and at 11:45 a.m. with Florida A&M.
