Gymnastics Set for EAGL Championships

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (March 20, 2013) - After posting a school record 194.740 regional qualifying score (RQS) through 11 regular season meets, Rutgers gymnastics is set to compete in the highly-anticipated East Atlantic Gymnastics League Championships Saturday, March 23 at 2 p.m. inside Carmichael Arena on the campus of the University of North Carolina. It is the last chance for the Scarlet Knights to improve their RQS and move into the top 36 nationally to qualify for the NCAA Regionals. The team is currently in the No. 39 spot, 0.210 behind No. 36 Iowa State.
"The goal this weekend is to go 24-for-24 and if we hit our routines I believe we are going be okay and challenge for the championship," head coach Louis Levine said. "We just have to believe and do our job. This meet is different than most meets, with eight teams competing. Every team in our conference is good and has a chance to win. I anticipate a very exciting day and look forward to getting down there."

With eight teams competing, each team will alternate between byes and events through the usual rotation. The Scarlet Knights will follow the order of vault, bye, uneven bars, bye, balance beam, bye, floor exercise and bye. Click here to view the complete order.
RU has a team-best RQS on the floor exercise with a 49.005, followed by vault (48.845), uneven bars (48.685) and balance beam (48.625). The squad will be looking to improve their team RQS to jump into the top 36. Qualification for NCAA Regional competition is based on a team's and an all-around competitor's six best regular-season-meet scores, of which three must be away. To obtain the RQS, the high score is eliminated and the remaining five scores are averaged.

The Scarlet Knights have had recent success in the last two EAGL Championships, reaching a meet program-high 193.850 team score last season at Pittsburgh and a team-best finish of fifth in 2011 at George Washington.
The EAGL consists of George Washington, Maryland, New Hampshire, North Carolina, NC State, Pittsburgh, Rutgers and Towson. West Virginia, no longer a member of the league, won the championship with a 196.475 score last season.
