Rutgers to Celebrate 150 Years of Rowing

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (Jan. 28, 2014) - Rutgers University will celebrate 150 years of rowing on Saturday, March 15, in New Brunswick, N.J. The festivities, which will begin at 3:30 p.m., will be held at Brower Commons on the College Ave. Campus.
"One-hundred fifty years of rowing on the Raritan River is definitely quite historic and it's an event that is definitely worth celebrating," said head coach Max Borghard. "You need to be around for such a historic event to understand where our roots came from. It's a great time to reflect back to the beginning days of Rutgers Rowing, when our boathouse was a barge attached to the Albany Street Bridge."
Festivities will begin at 3:30 p.m. with reception and a silent auction. Dinner begins at 6:00 p.m., followed by a special presentation featuring highlights of the history of Rutgers Crew presented by several distinguished Rutgers Crew Alumni.

Rutgers Rowing - A Brief History
Rutgers Rowing has grown substantially in the last 150 years. Rowing began as a men's sport in 1864, expanding to include women in 1974. The Raritan River provides an unlimited number of miles of water which are used almost exclusively by Rutgers Rowing, while the Class of 1914 Boathouse is located along the Raritan River.
The boathouse was built in 1950 and is a gift of the Class of 1914. An addition was made in 1961 and today in houses over 20 boats. The boathouse also underwent renovations, most recently in 2010. Rutgers has top-of-the-line equipment, with brand new boats and oars coming in every year.
