MADISON, WIS. (Oct. 10, 2014) - Returning to the road, the Rutgers women's volleyball team was swept by No. 6 Wisconsin on Friday night at the Field House. RU fell to its third ranked opponent on the season, moving to an overall record of 7-11 and 0-5 in the Big Ten.
"I thought we settled into the match after the first set," said head coach CJ Werneke. "We played especially well in the set three. We are continuing to learn more about ourselves as players, as coaches and as a program. We are finding great opportunities to compete against the very best in the country and we are continuing to realize that we can compete at this level."
The attendance of 4,608 marked the largest crowed the Scarlet Knights have ever played in front of. In 2011, Rutgers went up against a then-record crowd of 3,144 at No. 5 Penn State.
Leading the offense, junior outside Alex Lassa (Eagle, Colo.) notched 10 kills against Wisconsin. In her second appearance of the season, sophomore outside Micaela Anderson (La Canada, Calif.) recorded four kills, a dig and a block. Freshman setter Talia Holze (Wheaton, Ill.) put up a team-high 14 assists.
Defensively, junior libero Ali Schroeter (Bakersfiled, Calif.) paced the squad with 12 digs.
The Badgers were led by freshman outside Kelli Bates with 11 kills in the match. Sophomore middle Haleigh Nelson paced the powerful defense with six blocks.
Rutgers got off to a slow start in set one. Down 0-7, freshman outside Meme Fletcher (Overland Park, Kan.) downed a kill to put the Scarlet Knights on the board. A serve by Fletcher pushed the play to a kill by sophomore middle Lauren Cloyd (Champaign, Ill.), bringing the score to 2-7. The Badgers' defense stumped the momentum and controlled the set from that point on. Wisconsin took the first stanza by the wide margin of 8-25.
Despite falling behind 3-10 in the second set, the Scarlet Knights picked up the pace, bringing the count to 11-16. Wisconsin added on two more points before Rutgers went on a three point run to keep the score at 14-18. The Scarlet Knights continued to rally, but were unable to hold off the Badgers, falling 17-25 in set two.
Rutgers came alive in set three, trading points with Wisconsin from the onset. RU moved ahead in the count, 3-2, for its first lead in the match. With the Scarlet Knights up 5-4, the Badgers responded with four straight points to get away to an 8-5 lead. Led by two kills by Anderson, Rutgers brought the score to 8-9. The Scarlet Knights put up a strong fight until the end, but the late momentum was not enough to top the Badgers. Wisconsin took the third set 25-15 and the victory.
Up next, Rutgers travels to No. 23 Minnesota tomorrow for an 8 p.m. match.
