Northwestern Stuns No. 14/7 WSOC in OT

Oct. 19, 2014

Box Score

PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The No. 14/7 Rutgers women's soccer team dropped its first match of the season at Yurcak Field Sunday afternoon, falling, 1-0, to Northwestern. The loss was the first at home for RU since Oct. 24, 2013 against UConn.

The Scarlet Knights (11-2-1, 7-2-1 Big Ten) wrap up the year 8-1-1 at home.

Both teams struggled for looks throughout the match, but Rutgers caught a break in the 95th minute, gaining a penalty kick opportunity. Junior Erica Skroski (Galloway, N.J.) lined up to take the attempt, but it skipped right and off the post to keep the game at 0-0.

Minutes later in the 98th, Northwestern caught RU on a counter down the middle of field, as the Wildcats' leading scorer, Addie Steiner, broke free and drew freshman goalkeeper Casey Murphy (Bridgewater, N.J.) out of net.

Steiner flipped the ball over Murphy and into the goal, with the ball rolling in just before Skroski could get to it.

Prior to the match, the Scarlet Knights honored their six seniors - Brielle Buis (Franklin Lakes, N.J.), Amanda DeVolk (Frisco, Texas ), Cassie Inacio (Manalapan, N.J.), Tori Leigh (Hamilton, N.J.), Amy Pietrangelo (Laval, Quebec, Canada) and Stefanie Scholz (South Hackensack, N.J.).
