Oct. 26, 2014

Box Score

ST. PAUL, Minn. (Oct. 26, 2014) - The No.16/10 Rutgers women's soccer team suffered a 2-0 setback Sunday afternoon at Minnesota. The Scarlet Knights and Golden Gophers battled for possession throughout the match, but it was Minnesota that took advantage of corner kicks to net both of its goals in the win.

"The team played very well and had opportunities, we just didn't finish in front of the net," said head coach Mike O'Neill. "Minnesota took advantage of two set pieces, we just didn't capitalize. The girls played great, we believe in them more than ever."

The first goal came in the 33rd minute off the head of Josee Stiever - her first of two goals in the contest. The ball was sent in from the far side on a corner, finding Stiever from six yards out who sent a shot into the back left of the net.

Nearly 30 minutes later in the second half, Stiever struck again, this time cleaning up a rebound off a corner from the top left of the box with a flick past freshman goalkeeper Casey Murphy (Bridgewater, N.J.). The right-footed finish was her second goal of the game and sealed the Minnesota win.

The Scarlet Knights (11-4-1, 7-4-1 Big Ten) threatened throughout, posting 13 shots and three on goal, but could not cross the ball into net.

Rutgers recorded eight corners in the match - its highest total since Oct. 20, 2013 at USF.

The Scarlet Knights will close their season Friday at Ohio State. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
