PRINCETON, N.J. (October 7, 2014) - Freshman forward Jason Wright (Kingston, Jamaica) scored both Scarlet Knight goals in the Rutgers men's soccer 5-2 loss to Princeton on Tuesday night at Roberts Stadium. It was Wright's second multiple goal game of the season.
The loss dropped the Scarlet Knights, who end a three-game road trip, to 3-6-1 overall. The Tigers, meanwhile, improved to 4-3-2 on the season.
Rutgers wasted no time on getting on the scoreboard with Wright giving the Scarlet Knights the lead four minutes into play. Wright, on his fourth goal of the year, was set up by junior Ross Tetro (Freehold, N.J.) who centered a long ball to his teammate to speed past the Princeton defense for the shot.
The Tigers responded, however, with three unanswered goals to up 3-1 by the half. Cameron Porter put in the equalizer in the 12th minute from 18-yards out into the top right corner of the Scarlet Knight net.
Princeton's Thomas Sanner, on the first of his three tallies of the night, gave Princeton the lead for good seven minutes later. Off a Tiger corner opportunity, as the Scarlet Knights tried to clear the ball out of the box, the clear bounced off Sanner and into the back of the RU goal.
Princeton took a 3-1 edge into the half with 12.8 seconds remaining in the opening stanza as Porter rounded the left corner to draw out RU keeper David Greczek (Fairfield, N.J.) before passing off to Sanner for an open look.
In the early moments of the second half, Wright cut RU's deficit to one. With his team-leading fifth goal of the year in the 54th minute of play, Wright looked to have a one-on-one with Princeton netminder Ben Hummel. As Hummel came out of net to play the ball, Wright tapped the ball off the keeper, collecting the rebound for an open net goal.
The Tigers would add two more insurance goals before the end with Sanner collecting the hattrick in the 59th minute and Porter putting away his second goal of the night in the 68th minute.
Rutgers had several chances thwarted by Hummel, who finished with five stops. With the Scarlet Knights trailing, 4-2, redshirt junior JP Correa (Montville, N.J.) powered his way through the middle but had the ball scooped up. Sophomore Erik Sa (Watchung, N.J.) had a chance up putting in RU's third goal of the evening in the 74th minute off a free kick, but Hummel punched the ball up and over the net.
"Sanner and Porter are a handful and I give those guys a lot of credit," said head coach Dan Donigan. "It's difficult, but we need to regroup for Saturday against Michigan. The good thing is we have a lot to still play for within the conference and there are still a lot more games to go."
Grezeck made four saves in the loss, while sophomore Mitchell Walier (Holmdel, N.J.) played the final 20 minutes of the contest and registered four stops.
Princeton ended the night outshooting the Scarlet Knights, 22-14, and holding an 8-3 edge in corners.
The Rutgers men's soccer team returns home to Yurcak Field for six of their next seven games. The Scarlet Knights play host to Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
