GREENBURGH, N.Y. - Rutgers took second place at the third annual St. John's Women's Intercollegiate, played Monday and Tuesday at The Saint Andrew's Golf Club, the oldest golf course in the United States.
After recording a 325 in the opening round, Rutgers came back Tuesday with a much-improved 304, finishing with a final total of 629, 15 strokes behind champion Seton Hall University.
The par 71, 5,801-yard course was more cooperative on Tuesday, after wind gusts ranging from 20 to 30 miles-per-hour hampered the 12 team, 68-player field on Monday.
"We were disappointed with our play yesterday," said first-year head coach Kari Williams. "And the team came back out this morning and put in a good practice before our round. They worked to be committed to their shots and to play better. And they went out and did that, so I'm very proud of them for that."
Three Scarlet Knights finished among the top 10 competitors. Junior Gabrielle Sacheli tied for sixth individually with a 155 (81-74) to pace the team. Sophomore Taylor Clark recorded a 156 (80-76) to finish in eighth place and Racquel Zurick fired a 157 (79-78) to tie for ninth. Clark and Sacheli each finished among the top five golfers in par-four scoring average, with 4.11 strokes (+2) and 4.28 strokes (+5), respectively. Sacheli was even on par fives and had five birdies, while Clark recorded a team-best 20 pars.
Freshmen Tatum Jackson and Emily Mills also played much better rounds Tuesday. Jackson improved on her opening-round 85 with a 76 to finish the event tied for 17th with a 161. Mills shot a 172 (92-80) to tie for 41st. Jackson, who was even in par five scoring, had an eagle in the opening round.
Junior Christina Paulsen also played the tournament as an individual. Paulsen tied for 39th with a 171 (90-81). Her par-three scoring average of 3.30 strokes (+3) was the best among Rutgers golfers.
The Scarlet Knights will now return to campus and prepare to host the Rutgers Women's Invitational, October 11 and 12.
