The Scarlet Knights would never lose the lead though and back-to-back buckets by Copper quickly established a five-point cushion for her team and RU would enter the locker room at intermission ahead 31-26.
The Huskies, known for their three-point prowess, drilled a three to open up second half action and found themselves trailing just 35-31 with 17:08 left in the game. From there, RU went on a 16-0 run with six points coming from Copper and five from Laney to take a 20-point lead. Laney completed the and-one with 10:24 remaining for a 51-31 Scarlet Knight edge.
Northeastern would not get any closer than 13 points the rest of the afternoon.
The Huskies were led by Jewel Tunstull with 18 points and 14 rebounds and A'Lece Mark with 11 points.

Laney captured 15 double-doubles last season, the most double figure scoring and rebounding games since Kia Vaughn, currently with the WNBA's Washington Mystics, had 12 double-doubles during the 2006-07 season.

She currently has 154 career blocks and needs 24 more blocks to move into fifth all-time on RU's career blocked shots list.
Hollivay ended last year with 127 rejections and is third (men or women) in blocks in a single season. Only Hamady Ndiaye (2009-10) and Roy Hinson (1982-83) on the men's side have blocked more shots in a single season, swatting away 145 and 144, respectively.
PROTECTING HOME COURT
The squad's 15 home wins in 2013-14 season tied for the most wins at the RAC under the 20-year tenure of C. Vivian Stringer. The Scarlet Knights also went 15-3 at home in the 1998-99 season.
GETTING TO THE POINTS
On the season, RU averaged 66.2 points per game. That was 10.2 points more than the squad averaged the previous year and the best scoring average since the Final Four season in 2006-07, when the Scarlet Knights averaged 64.4 points per game.
The Scarlet Knights scored 60 or more points in 29 of their 37 games last season, reaching the 70+ point mark 10 times and the 90+ mark three times.

Betnijah Laney, who led RU in rebounding at 8.5 boards per game last season, did not miss a beat in the season opener leading all on the glass with 13 boards in Friday's game with St. Joseph's.

ABOUT NORTHEASTERN
Northeastern opened the 2014-15 season on Friday as well giving first year head coach Kelly Cole her first career victory with a 75-74 win over crosstown rival Boston University.
Five Huskies scored inthe win led by junior Samantha DeFreese with a career-high 24 points along with 14 rebounds.
Northeastern returns four of its top five scorers from last year, including senior guard A'lece Mark. Mark, a Preseason All-Colonial Athletic Association pick, did not play last Friday in the win over the Terriers. Last season, she averaged 15.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game.
The Huskies concluded the 2013-14 season at 12-18 overall and 6-10 in the CAA.
ALL-TIME VS. NORTHEASTERN
Tuesday will mark the seventh meeting and second consecutive season Northeastern and Rutgers will meet on the hardwood. RU owns a 5-1 series advantage, including last season's 65-51 victory in Boston, and has won the last four straight contests.
LAST TIME VS. NORTHEASTERN
Double-doubles by Kahleah Copper and Betnijah Laney fueled the Rutgers women's basketball team to a 65-51 victory over Northeastern in a noon contest back on November 13, 2013 at Matthews Arena.
Three Scarlet Knights ended the game in double figures as Copper had a game-high 26 points along with 11 rebounds and Laney poured in 15 points and 13 rebounds. Briyona Canty added 12 points in the win.
Playing in front of over 1,000 elementary school children at Northeastern's hockey arena, RU opened the game on a 7-0 run and held the Huskies without a field goal for the first five minutes of the game. Canty, who finished 2-of-3 from beyond the arc, hit a three with 15:19 left in the first half to give the Scarlet Knights its first double digit lead of the game, 12-2.
Rutgers led 16-5 at the midway point of the first stanza when Northeastern went on a 14-4 run and closed their deficit to only a point, 20-19 with 6:17 left.

Additionally, the Scarlet Knights are 35-6 in the first home game of the season, including a 16-4 record under Stringer.

Tyler Scaife, last year's American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, opened her sophomore season with a game-high 23 points in RU's 76-52 win over St. Joseph's.
It was her eighth 20+ point game of her career and 29th double digit scoring effort. Scaife shot 9-of-13 from the floor, including a perfect 6-of-6 in the second half, and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
