IOWA CITY, IA - The Rutgers men's cross country team took 12th overall in their first ever Big Ten Cross Country Championship on Sunday at Ashton Cross Country course in Iowa City, Iowa.
RU, who had to battle 20 mph winds on the 8K course, was led by freshman Luke Wiley (Willamstown, N.J.), one of four first year Scarlet Knights racing in the championship. Wiley placed 87th overall as the top RU finisher with a time of 25:41.5.
"I thought our guys ran real hard. Several of the guys ran personal bests for five mile course," said head coach Mike Mulqueen. "It is a very tough cross country league, one of the best in the country, so we have to learn from it and keep working."
Following Wiley across the finish line were junior Jaimin Vekaria (Clinton, N.J.) in 91st in a time of 25:55.7 and fellow freshman Alexander Livernois (Scotch Plains, N.J) in 96th in a time of 26:17.2.
Other Scarlet Knight results included Sam Habib in 100th (26:54.6), immediately followed by freshman Trent Brinkofski (Somerset, N.J.) in 101st (26:58.3), freshman Morgan Murray (Princeton, N.J.) in 102nd (27:20.1) and junior Daniel Lee (Plainsboro, N.J.) in 103rd (27:29.0). The Big Ten Cross Country Championships will air on BTN via tape-delay at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Nov. 12.
