On the year, Laney is averaging 11.3 points and 14.0 rebounds per game.
NO SOPHOMORE SLUMP
Tyler Scaife, last year's American Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year, has led the Scarlet Knights in scoring in five-straight games, dating back to last year's WNIT run.
She opened her sophomore season with a game-high 23 points in RU's 76-52 win over St. Joseph's. With her 23 points against the Hawks, Scaife had her eighth 20+ point game of her career and 29th double digit scoring effort. Scaife shot 9-of-13 from the floor, including a perfect 6-of-6 in the second half, and 5-of-6 from the free throw line.
Scaife also led the Scarlet Knights with 15 points in the win over Northeastern and a game-high 16 points in RU's first road win of the year at LSU on Saturday.
FROM SIXTH WOMAN TO STARTING LINEUP
Briyona Canty, who served as Rutgers' "sixth woman" a year ago, has a successful start at point guard for the Scarlet Knights in her first two games of 2014-15.
Canty captured her second career double-double with 12 points and a new career-high 10 assists in the win over Northeastern last Tuesday night. It was the second straight game the redshirt junior guard had reset her career mark in assists. She performed her first double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds in RU's WNIT semifinal win at USF.
In the season opener against St. Joseph's Cantytied her career-high in points (16) and also added a then career-high eight assists. The redshirt junior guard also captured 16 points in the Scarlet Knights' American Athletic Conference semifinal appearance against eventual national champion, UConn.
Canty has reached double figure scoring in five of her last six games dating back to last season.
DOUBLE DISHING
Briyona Canty's 10 assists in RU's win over Northeastern on Nov. 18 marked the first double digit assist game for a Scarlet Knight since Syessence Davis dished out the ball 10 times against Providence on Jan. 16, 2013.
BETTING DOUBLE
Senior forward Betnijah Laney has opened 2014-15 with three straight double-double performances and ranks second nationally in the category.
She registered the first double-double performance of the year with 10 points and 13 rebounds in the season opening win over St. Joseph's and followed with 14 points and 13 boards in the victory over Northeastern. In Rutgers' first road trip, Laney notched 10 points and a career-high 16 rebounds
Laney currently has 18 double-doubles in her career.
Her 16 rebounds in the 65-57 win at LSU on Saturday, were the most by a Scarlet Knight since Laney hauled in 15 in RU's win over Houston on Jan. 4, 2014.
The Clayton, Delaware native captured 15 double-doubles last season, the most double figure scoring and rebounding games since Kia Vaughn, currently with the WNBA's Washington Mystics, had 12 double-doubles during the 2006-07 season.
DOUBLE TROUBLE
The Scarlet Knights finished with five in double figures on Tuesday night against Northeastern, including Betnijah Laney and Briyona Canty with double-doubles.
Rutgers last had five Scarlet Knights in double figures in its win over Wagner on Dec. 20, 2013.
Betnijah Laney and Briyona Canty are the first Scarlet Knight duo since Rachel Hollivay (26 pts, 13 reb.) and Kahleah Copper (23 pts, 13 reb) against Howard on Nov. 22, 2013 to have two double-doubles in a game.
BLOCK PARTY
Rachel Hollivay swatted away five Hawk shots in RU's season opener and then again in the Scarlet Knights' first road game at LSU. She currently ranks 13th nationally in the category.
Hollivay has registered 25 games with three or more blocks.
She currently has 160 career blocks and needs 18 more blocks to move into fifth all-time on RU's career blocked shots list.
Hollivay ended last year with 127 rejections and is third (men or women) in blocks in a single season. Only Hamady Ndiaye (2009-10) and Roy Hinson (1982-83) on the men's side have blocked more shots in a single season, swatting away 145 and 144, respectively.
LIVING IN THE PAINT
Rutgers continues to dominate the paint just like they did last season.
RU is averaging 36.0 points in the paint through its first three games of 2014-15, which included a season-high 38 in Saturday's win at LSU.
RU poured in 34 points inside against St. Joseph's in the season opener and had 36 points versus Northeastern last Tuesday night.
RU scored 30 or more points in the paint in 27 of its 37 games last season. Rutgers registered 40 or more points inside seven times during the 2013-14 campaign, including a season-high of 52 against Wagner (Dec. 13) and UCF (Feb. 15).
