WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The fourth-seeded Rutgers women's soccer team battled all match after falling behind early, but could not find the equalizer in a 1-0 loss to fifth-seeded Iowa Wednesday in the Big Ten Conference Quarterfinals.
The No. 23/19 ranked Scarlet Knights (12-5-1, 8-4-1 Big Ten) will await the bracket announcement from the NCAA Division I Women's Soccer Selection Show, which will air at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10 online at NCAA.com.
"I'm extremely proud of the effort we gave, not only today but all year," said head coach Mike O'Neill. "We now have to wait and see what happens with NCAAs. But from day one, this team has given a great effort."
RU outshot Iowa, 12-3, in the second half in an attempt to get on the board.
Sophomore Madison Tiernan (Voorhees, N.J.) registered the final Scarlet Knight shot of the contest with a header at the 89:41 mark, but the look sailed wide left.
Junior back Erica Skroski (Galloway, N.J.) had one of the Scarlet Knights' best looks down the stretch in the 80th minute off an RU set piece. Senior Amy Pietrangelo (Laval, Quebec) sent the ball forward and found an open Skroski, but Hannah Clark was there to keep the Scarlet Knights off the board.
Senior Stef Scholz (South Hackensack, N.J.) was inches away from getting RU on the board in the 18th minute, hitting from the left side and about 15 yards out off of the far post.
Iowa struck first in the 10th minute with a rebound score off a corner. The ball was sent in from the far side by Bri Toelle and bounced to Melanie Pickert in front, who fired one at net that was saved by Reed.
The ball kicked back again on the deflection to Natalie Krygier, who this time found the back of the net for the early Hawkeye lead.
Rutgers will learn its NCAA Tournament fate at 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 10.
