Kingston, R.I. (Sept. 12, 2014) - The Rutgers women's volleyball team swept NJIT (25-14, 25-17, 25-19) in its second match of the day at the Art Carmichael Invitational. It marks the second sweep of the season for the Scarlet Knights.

"I felt we responded well after a disappointing loss to Cincinnati in the first match. I was pleased with our team's level of communication and their ability to stay involved throughout the match. We were focused on our level of play and it showed in our execution," said head coach CJ Werneke.

Senior setter Nicole Bayer (Concord, Ohio) paced RU with 15 assists, followed by freshman setter Talia Holze (Wheaton, Illi.) with 14 assists. Freshman outside Meme Fletcher (Overland Park, Kan.) tallied a team-high 14 kills in the victory.

Senior libero Ali Schroeter (Bakersfield, Calif.) led the squad with 13 digs.

Rutgers got off to a quick start in set one, posting seven unanswered points to bring the score to 9-2. With Rutgers up 12-5, NJIT notched seven-straight points of their own to tie the game at 12-12. The Scarlet Knights were able to reclaim the lead over the Highlanders and take the first set 25-17.

Set two started with the teams trading points before RU jumped to a 14-9 lead. From that point on, the Scarlet Knights maintained strong control of the set, topping the Highlanders 25-17.

Moving into the third set, Rutgers fell to NJIT at the start. As the set progressed, Rutgers regained its momentum, tying the match 10-10. The Highlanders continued to put up a strong fight, but the Scarlet Knights never let up, closing the set 25-19 to seal the victory.

Rutgers closes its weekend with a match against host Rhode Island tomorrow at 3 p.m.
