Rutgers Volleyball Downed by Rhode Island

Box Score

Kingston, R.I. (Sept. 13, 2014) - The Rutgers women's volleyball team concluded its weekend at the Art Carmichael Tournament, falling to Rhode Island in three-straight sets (21-25, 13-25, 23-25) on Saturday.

"We weren't at our best today. Overall, this weekend we were too inconsistent and ultimately that is what led to our two losses. We will learn from this as a staff and make sure we work on the foundation of our program, which is based on executing in the passing, serving and defensive parts of the game," said head coach CJ Werneke.

Sophomore middle Lauren Cloyd (Champaign, Ill.) was named to the Wendy Miranda All-Tournament Team following her performance this weekend. Cloyd notched a total of 26 kills in the tournament to pace the Scarlet Knights. She recorded at least a .316 hitting percentage across all three matches.

It marks the first All-Tournament selection for Cloyd. It is also the second All-Tournament Team selection for RU this season, after freshman outside Meme Fletcher (Overland Park, Kan.) received Seton Hall All-Tournament accolades a week prior.

In today's match, set one proved to be a close rally between the teams. Rhode Island held control throughout, but Rutgers kept the score even. Despite tying the set multiple times, the Scarlet Knights fell 21-25 in the first.

Moving into the second set, Rutgers kept the count balanced yet again, before Rhode Island reached a 10-4 lead. The Rams never let up, taking the set 25-13.

RU started the third set behind, before taking the lead 11-9. The Scarlet Knights gained some momentum, tacking on five-straight points to go up 18-13. Rhode Island held on, bringing the set to 21-21. The teams rallied in the final plays, before RU fell 23-25 to end the match in three.

After three-consecutive road tournaments, the Scarlet Knights open their home slate on Friday, Sept. 19, hosting the Rutgers Invitational. The tournament will feature Akron, American, James Madison and Princeton.
