HOLIDAY ROAD
The Scarlet Knights opened the season with six straight win on the road before suffering an 85-68 setback at Ohio State on Jan. 1.
It was the best Rutgers road record to open up a season since winning six road games to open up the 2005-06 season. That season RU not only kicked off the season with eight straight victories, but defeated North Florida (66-36) and N.C. State (66-56) at the Junkanoo Jam, as well as San Jose State (76-64), Iowa (57-51), Providence (58-45) and Princeton (65-56) away from home. Ole Miss snapped the streak as the Scarlet Knights fell 67-57 on Dec. 14, 2005. RU would go on to finish the season at 27-5 overall and 16-0 in Big East play, reaching the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.
WELCOME BACK TO THE B1G TIME
Rutgers head coach C. Vivian Stringer is no stranger to the league. Stringer was at the helm of the Iowa Hawkeye program from 1983-95 and holds the second-most Big Ten victories in conference history with 170 wins in league play. She won 169 games while at Iowa and one at Rutgers.
Penn State's Rene Portland holds the record with 176 wins from 1980-2007.
HAWKEYE CONNECTIONS
Rutgers also has connections to the Iowa program with assistant coach Tia Jackson and Director of Basketball Operations Michelle Edwards.
A 1995 graduate of the University of Iowa, Jackson played for Stringer and helped lead the Hawkeyes to four top-25 rankings in five seasons before earning her bachelor's degree in media studies and film. As a junior, Jackson helped Iowa to a 27-4 record, a berth in the NCAA Final Four and was named to the NCAA Mideast Regional All-Tournament team. For her career, she averaged 10.2 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. Jackson was honored as an All-Big Ten Conference selection and a Street & Smith's Preseason All-American twice.
An inductee to Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014 and the Iowa Hall of Fame in 2000, Edwards is the only female Hawkeye to have her jersey retired. Playing for the Hawkeyes from 1984-88, she posted career totals that still rank in the top-three more than twenty years later, having scored 1,821 points, 431 assists and 235 steals. Edwards was selected as one of Iowa's "Top 50 Athletes of the Century" as well as the Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Decade in 1989. Following a freshman season in which she helped lead the Hawkeyes to a 20-8 record, Edwards piloted UI to back-to-back NCAA Tournament regional final appearances (1987, 1988) and a No. 1 national ranking. As a senior, Edwards - nicknamed `Ice' for her ability to hit the clutch shot - was selected the Big Ten Player of the Year, a Kodak, Naismith and USBWA All-American and the Champion National Player of the Year.
