PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Sophomore Trent Brinkofski (Somerville, N.J.) was named Big Ten Cross Country Athlete of the Week, it was announced Wednesday by the conference. Brinkofski was the top finisher for Rutgers last Friday at the Metropolitan Championships, where the Scarlet Knights finished third, their highest finish at the event in six years.
For RU, it marks the first time a cross country athlete has received the honor from the Big Ten.
"The honor is well deserved," said head coach Mike Mulqueen. "Trent has trained extremely hard and he was due for a breakout race. The result showed what he is capable of as a runner. I'm really proud of him."
Brinkofski placed seventh at the Metropolitan Championships, held at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, securing a final time of 26:54.7 for RU. The result marked the highest finish for Brinkofski this year and the second-highest individual finish for a Scarlet Knight this year.
Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 17, when the Scarlet Knights compete in the Princeton Invitational at the West Windsor Fields in Princeton, N.J.
