Men's Golf Concludes Fall Season at Maryland Invitational

ROCKVILLE, Md. (Oct. 20, 2015) - The Rutgers men's golf team concluded the fall season on Tuesday, finishing seventh with a 606 scorecard (296-310) at the Maryland Invitational held at the Woodmont Country Club's North Course in Rockville, Md.
"I thought the invitational was a reflection of our season," said head coach Rob Shutte. "We had some individual bright spots, but we were one or two good scores from putting it all together. We competed hard and we're right there, we just need to put more work to reach the next level. With the help of [new strength and conditioning consultant] Ben Shear, we'll improve our bodies and get better during the offseason."
James Madison won the two-day event with a five-over-par 581 (294-287). Loyola (Md.) carded a 12-over-par 588 (295-293) to secure second, while host Maryland finished with an 18-over-par 594 (292-302).
After an impressive first round on Monday, sophomore Toks Pedro (Lagos, Nigeria) finished tied for fifth with a two-over-par 146 (70-76). Pedro led the Scarlet Knights with seven birdies during two rounds of action.
Classmate Matt Holuta (Indiana, Pa.) also completed the event within the top-10, securing a three-over-par 147 (72-75) to place tied for seventh.
Senior Jonathan Chang (Valencia, Calif.) contributed a 157 (77-80) to finish 46th in the field, while junior Chase Wheatley (Corona del Mar, Calif.) carded a 160 (81-79) to complete the invite tied for 52nd. Sophomore Jack Panagos (Hillsborough, N.J.) also contributed to the team total with a 161 (77-84) for a tied for 56th finish.
Freshman Matthew Mourin (Weston, Fla.) competed as an individual for Rutgers, finishing tied for 47th with a two-round total of 158 (79-79).
The Scarlet Knights will continue to train this offseason in preparation for the spring, when RU competes in Big Ten Match Play from Feb. 12 to Feb. 13 in Palm Coast, Fla., to begin the second portion of their 20015-16 schedule.
