WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A second half comeback gave Rutgers field hockey a big road win, as they defeated American 2-1 Friday at the William I. Jacobs Recreation Complex. The Scarlet Knights trailed 1-0 at halftime before getting goals in the second half from Linde van Schaik and Sarah Regn.
"I am very proud of the team for their work rate and their attention to details today," head coach Meredith Civico said. "We got ourselves back in the game late in the second half with a brilliant finish by Linde van Schaik and then the eventual game winner by Sarah Regn."
The first half was fairly even between the two squads until late in the stanza. With just under three minutes remaining in the frame, Sophia Crawshaw finished off a pass from Jess Davis to put the Eagles ahead 1-0 heading into the break. For the half, AU held a slim 6-5 edge in shots, while Rutgers successfully defended five penalty corners.
In the second half, a goal from a RU freshman gave the Scarlet Knights fresh live. 50 minutes into the game, Linde van Schaik scored an unassisted tally to tie the game at 1-1.
With just over three minutes left in the game, Rutgers struck again for the game-winner. The ball was loose in the crease off of a rebound, and Sarah Regn knocked it home to give the Scarlet Knights the lead for good.
In the second half, the Scarlet Knights outshot American 5-4, with shots even for the game at 10-10.
Shevaun Hayes made six saves in the game, earning her seventh win of the season.
The contest was the lone game this weekend for the Scarlet Knights. Next weekend are the final two games of the season, starting with a contest Friday at Indiana that will be broadcast on Big Ten Network.

The win is the first ever victory by Rutgers over American in the sixth lifetime game between the two schools.
