PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers head coach C. Vivian Stringer gave her thoughts on the upcoming season to the members of the media at the Scarlet Knights' annual media day but what do seniors Kahleah Copper and Cynthia Hernandez expect?
Just like their coach, they have high expectations too.
"I want to do better than last year. I want to go further in the tournament. As far as the Big Ten I want to win it," said Copper of the Scarlet Knights' goals heading into the 2015-16 campaign. "As for me individually, I want to be All-Big Ten. I want to be an All-American. I want to go pro," she said matter of factly.
Copper, the team's leading returning scorer for the last two seasons and a preseason All-Big Ten selection, isn't resting on her laurels though.
"I need to continue to lead my team to go further in the NCAA Tournament," Copper noted. "I need to work hard every day and continue to work on the skills in order to be a better player and that's my three-point shot and handling the ball tighter. "
Hernandez, who joined the Scarlet Knights last season, wants to contribute in exactly the way she was brought out from California to do.
"My goal is to lead in three-pointers," she said concisely with a smile.
Hernandez shot nearly 42 percent from beyond the arc last season, going 27-of-64 from three-point range. Among her highlights last season was a perfect 5-of-5 afternoon from downtown at Wisconsin
"Overall, I'm excited for the season to be here. It's my last season and I hope, make that I know, that we are going to go far."
Copper and Hernandez also pointed out some of the new faces on the squad that are eager to help the Scarlet Knights make a deeper run into this year's Big Ten and NCAA Tournaments.
"Someone who is going to surprise us this year is going to be KK (Sanders). She's going to basically show that she can play as a freshman and that's she's not scared to play," said Hernandez.
"I think KK is going to surprise a lot of people. She's so small, but she's capable of doing anything. She has a big heart and she's not afraid of anything," said Copper. "Also, Alliyah (Jeune). I think she's going to be a shocker too, because she has that range that people aren't used to from Rutgers. I think when she comes out and hits shots, it's going to be an eye opener. "
