PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (1-0) welcomes Howard (0-1) to the RAC on Sunday for a 1 p.m. tip-off. The contest versus the Bison is the first of two (Central Arkansas, Nov.21) opening round games at the truncated pyramid in the Men Who Speak Up Main Event. The Scarlet Knights travel to Las Vegas to meet Creighton (Nov. 23) and Clemson/UMass (Nov. 25) at the MGM Grand in the championship round of the event. Sunday is Junior Knights Day, as kids 12 and under can shoot post game foul shots. The first 500 fans receive complimentary schedule magnets.
The game will be streamed live via the web on BTN Plus with Kevin Fitzgerald calling the action and Dick Lloyd providing the analysis. The contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick, as well as on Sirius 125 and XM 196. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7) will also broadcast the game.
Sunday afternoon's match-up marks the second meeting between Rutgers and Howard on the collegiate hardwood. The Scarlet Knights are 12-0 all-time against current members of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. RU defeated Howard 79-55 at the RAC in the first match-up on Dec. 21, 2012. The Scarlet Knights shot 60 percent (33-55) and three players registered double figures.
Sophomore guard Mike Williams posted his first career double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing a career-best 11 rebounds, to help Rutgers to a 72-59 victory over Rutgers-Newark Friday night at the RAC. The Scarlet Knights out-scored the visitors 39-26 after the break and established a 39-2 advantage in bench points. Williams, who also had a career-high five steals, was joined in double figures by junior forward Deshawn Freeman and sophomore forward D.J. Foreman. Freeman came off the bench in the second half, posting 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting with four rebounds in 17 minutes. Foreman was 5-of-7 from the field to post 10 points with six rebounds in 22 minutes. Rutgers shot 50 percent (30-of-60) and established a 45-27 advantage on the glass.
Howard, under the leadership of sixth-year head coach Kevin Nickelberry, suffered a hard-fought 85-79 defeat at UMass on Saturday afternoon. The Bison led by nine at halftime and out-rebounded the Minutemen 37-31. HU's starting guards, James Daniel and James Miller, combined to score 57 points. Daniel had 30 points on 9-of-21 shooting, while Miller posted 27 on 11-of-19 FGAs.
