PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers men's soccer team earned an at-large bid to the 2015 NCAA Tournament and will host LIU Brooklyn on Thursday at Yurcak Field in first round action.
"It's exciting. It's nice to be back in the tournament. It refreshes you, it reenergizes you. Now everyone is 0-0 and anyone can win at this point. There are 48 quality teams in the tournament," said head coach Dan Donigan. "We're excited to be able to host a game, which is a bonus. Now it's time to learn about LIU Brooklyn and what they are all about for Thursday's game."
The Scarlet Knights will be making their 17th NCAA Tournament appearance, last playing in the 48-team bracket in 2011 and advancing to the third round.
Rutgers enters the tournament at 12-6-1 overall and tied for third in the Big Ten Conference with a 4-4-0 mark. The Scarlet Knights defeated Northwestern, 2-0, in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals before their run was stopped in the semifinals by Ohio State, the Big Ten regular season champions.
LIU Brooklyn was both the Northeast Conference's regular season and tournament champions and sport an 11-5-4 overall record. The Blackbirds captured the NEC Tournament title by defeating Saint Francis (PA), in penalty kicks. LIU Brooklyn will be making its 14th overall NCAA Tournament appearance and first since 2004.
