PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (2-1) welcomes Central Arkansas (0-2) to the RAC on Saturday for a 5 p.m. tip-off. The contest versus the Bears is the second of two opening round games at the truncated pyramid in the Men Who Speak Up Main Event. The Scarlet Knights travel to Las Vegas to meet Creighton (Nov. 23) and Clemson/UMass (Nov. 25) at the MGM Grand in the championship round of the event. Saturday is Healthcare Appreciation Day, as all healthcare professionals and their families are able to purchase discounted tickets for the game. Fans can also buy popcorn for just $2.00 and Mutts Gone Nuts will perform at halftime.
The Scarlet Knights are in the midst of playing a game every-other-day over a span of eight days with four contests.
The game will be streamed live via the web on BTN Plus with Lou Brogno calling the action and Dick Lloyd providing the analysis. The contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York and WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Danny Breslauer will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7) will also broadcast the game.
Saturday afternoon's contest marks the first meeting between the schools on the collegiate hardwood. It also signals UCA's first game played in the state of New Jersey.
Senior guard Bishop Daniels set career highs with 21 points, eight rebounds and five steals, but Rutgers was unable to close out a game in which it led for the majority, falling 61-59 to St. John's at Carnesecca Arena on Thursday night. The Scarlet Knights limited the Red Storm to 32.3 percent (20-of-62) shooting and established a 25-11 advantage in bench points in the hard-fought contest that was part of the inaugural Gavitt Tipoff Games. Daniels shot 10-of-17 in 33 minutes off the bench and was instrumental in RU forcing 15 turnovers. He was joined in double figures by sophomore guard Mike Williams, who contributed 13 points on a 5-of-10 performance from the field.
Although bench points is a specialty statistic not ranked among national team stats, the Scarlet Knights would most assuredly be among the national leaders if it were. RU has out-scored its opponents 105-29 in bench points.
Central Arkansas dropped an 89-62 decision at UMass on Thursday evening as the Minutemen hit 16 three-pointers and pulled away in the second half. The Minutemen shot 55.2 percent from beyond the arc and held the Bears to 32.3 percent (21 of 65) shooting. UCA was just two of 14 from three-point range after connecting on 11 threes in last Saturday's season-opening loss at Tulsa. Junior guard Derreck Brooks averages 16.5 points-per-game to lead three Bears in double figures.
