PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers (4-6) returns home to host Monmouth (7-3) in a 1 p.m. tip-of on Sunday. The RAC and the MAC are separated by an approximate 37-mile drive. The Hawks are one of four Garden State foes on the Scarlet Knights' schedule. It's First Responders Day on Sunday, as all first responders and their families can purchase discounted tickets. The first 500 fans will receive "ugly sweater" t-shirts, Handles Franklin from the Harlem Globetrotters will sign autographs pre-game and will perform in-game, and the Junior Knights Dance Team will perform at halftime.
For Rutgers students, the "Pay Your Tuition" contest continues, with the prize currently at $21,000 entering Saturday's women's game. One lucky Rutgers student in attendance on Sunday will win a hoverboard and the first 500 RU students will be treated to a post-game pizza party.
Sunday afternoon's game will be televised live via on BTN with Tom Werme calling the action and Dan Bonner providing the analysis. On the radio, the contest will be broadcast live on the Rutgers IMG Sports Network, WOR 710 AM in New York & WCTC 1450 AM in New Brunswick. Chris Carlin will serve as play-by-play announcer and Joe Boylan will provide commentary. WRSU (88.7 FM) will also broadcast the game.
The game will mark the 10th meeting on the collegiate hardwood between RU and Monmouth dating back to 1984, with the Scarlet Knights having won the prior nine meetings, seven of which took place at the RAC. In the last meeting at the truncated pyramid on Dec. 12, 2011, five Scarlet Knights scored in double figures to help Rutgers to an 81-66 victory. Last season, Myles Mack hit a buzzer-beating, 19-foot shot to provide RU a dramatic 59-58 victory in a Sunday afternoon matinee at the MAC. Mack posted 16 points, while Bishop Daniels added 12 points and five assists in the win.
Sophomore guard Mike Williams scored 11 points on 4-of-7 shooting, and Daniels added 12 points, but Rutgers fell 83-49 at now No. 21-ranked George Washington on Saturday. GW made 10 three-pointers and forced 22 RU turnovers while leading for the contest's entirety. The Scarlet Knights shot a season best 80 percent from the charity stripe, but were out-scored 16-2 in both second chance and fast break points.
Rutgers freshman point guard Corey Sanders leads Big Ten Conference freshmen in scoring (12.3) and steals (1.8).
Monmouth, the nation's leading free throw shooting team at 83 percent (200-of-244), earned an 83-68 victory at Georgetown on Tuesday night for its third straight win. The Hawks have played all but one game away from home this season and have earned several notable victories, including a 70-68 win versus No. 17 Notre Dame. Five players scored in double figures for MU at Georgetown, including senior guard Deon Jones, who had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Junior guard Justin Robinson leads the Hawks in scoring with 20.4 points-per-game, while junior guard Je'lon Hornbeak ranks first nationally in free throw percentage at 97.1 percent (33-of-34).
