PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers freshman point guard Corey Sanders was today named the Big Ten Conference Freshman of the Week. He scored a season-high 21 points and grabbed five rebounds to help the Scarlet Knights to a 72-64 win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Dec. 23.
Sanders currently leads all Big Ten freshmen in scoring (13.5) and steals (1.6), while ranking second among conference freshmen in assists (3.5).
On Wednesday, Sanders was 4-of-8 from behind the arc as Rutgers shot 41.2 percent (7-of-17) from long range to earn the victory. He was one of four Scarlet Knights to score in double figures.
Sanders has posted double figures in eight of the 11 games he has played this season. He leads the Scarlet Knights in scoring, steals, assists and minutes (30.9).
It marks the first Big Ten Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week honor for Rutgers, which is in its second season as a league member. The Scarlet Knights host UMass-Lowell tonight in a 7 p.m. tip-off on BTN.
