NEW YORK, N.Y. - It's a homecoming for two former Scarlet Knight greats. Cappie Pondexter will be suiting up for the Chicago Sky and Epiphanny Prince will be donning a New York Liberty uniform this summer for the WNBA.
Pondexter was the second overall pick of Phoenix in 2006, winning two WNBA Championships (2007, 2009) with the Mercury. A nine-year WNBA veteran, she joined the Liberty as part of a three-team trade in 2010 and averaged 17.9 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game in five seasons in New York. In 295 career games, Pondexter averaged 18.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. In 30 career playoff games, including five with the Liberty, Pondexter averaged 21.1 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.7 assists per contest. In 2014, Pondexter averaged 13.2 points and 3.9 assists per game for the Liberty.
A Chicago native, Pondexter is one of the most decorated players in Rutgers women's basketball history. The unanimous selection as 2006 BIG EAST Player of the Year, she was the first player in the league to earn first team honors four-straight years. Pondexter scored 2,211 points during her illustrious career. The Associated Press and Kodak/WBCA All-American concluded her collegiate career ranked in the top-10 in 12 categories in the RU record book. She was also the first player in Rutgers history to post 1,000 points, 500 rebounds and 400 assists in her career.
"I am thrilled to have one of the league's most fierce competitors join our team," said Sky Head Coach and General Manager Pokey Chatman. "Cappie's ability in the open court, half court, as well as on the defensive end of the floor, make us a better team. She's an All-Star, a WNBA Champion and, simply put, a winner with a hunger for greatness that can galvanize a team in its pursuit of a championship."
Prince, is a two-time WNBA All-Star (2011, 2013) and was the fourth overall pick of the Sky in 2010. A five-year WNBA veteran, she averaged 15.0 points, 3.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game in 2014. In her second year in the WNBA, she led the league in steals (79) and posted in the top-10 in three of her five seasons. Prince has appeared in 151 career games, averaging 14.1 points, 2.6 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.9 steals per game.
A Brooklyn native, Prince was a two-time Associated Press All-American Third Team selection in her three seasons with the Scarlet Knights. She concluded her collegiate career ninth all-time on the RU scoring chart (1,552 points) and sixth in steals (260) and was twice named a BIG EAST First Team honoree.
"We are thrilled to have Epiphanny join the Liberty and bring another hometown product back to New York City," said New York Liberty Senior Vice President of Business and Basketball Operations Kristin Bernert. "To add a player of her caliber, who is a dynamic talent on both ends of the court, is a great boost to this franchise."
