Davis Top 15 Finalist
Feb 23 | Women's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Senior guard Syessence Davis (Neptune, N.J.) is among the 15 watch list finalists for the Nancy Lieberman Award recognizing the top point guard in women's basketball. The original watch list of 30 candidates was narrowed down to 15 by a national committee.
"These 15 candidates exhibit floor leadership, play-making and ball-handling skills similar to those of Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman. We are pleased to be recognizing them for their commitment to the game," said John L. Doleva, President and CEO of the Basketball Hall of Fame.
A premier selection committee made up of top college basketball personnel including Hall of Famers, media members, head coaches and sports information directors was appointed by the Hall of Fame to review the candidates. The list will be narrowed down to a final five by mid-March with the Lieberman Award winner announced during the WBCA Award Show in Tampa, Florida at the Women's Final Four.
Davis is fourth nationally and the Big Ten leader in steals at 3.42 per game. With two games left in the regular season and post-season on the horizon, she is 11 thefts away from becoming Rutgers all-time steals leader and currently has 282 career steals. On the season, she has registered eight games with five or more steals and 16 games with three or more steals. Davis' 95 steals on the season place her fifth on Rutgers' single season leader list. Among her best performances this season was on Jan. 10 at Penn State, where Davis tied the single-game school record with 10 steals against the Lady Lions.
Additionally, the senior Scarlet Knight ranks fourth in the country and leads the Big Ten in assist/turnover radio (3.38). She has dished the ball out 112 times with only 33 turnovers. She has committed two or fewer turnovers in 21 of RU's 26 contests to date and has recorded 11 games with five or more assists. Additionally, she is currently 10th on RU's all-time assist leader list with 385 helpers.
