No. RV/19 UDel Wards Off WLAX Comeback

Feb. 28, 2015

Box Score

NEWARK, Del. - The Rutgers women's lacrosse team pulled within two of No. RV/19 Delaware early in the second half, but the Blue Hens warded off the comeback attempt, eventually hanging on to defeat the Scarlet Knights, 12-7, at Delaware Stadium.

The Blue Hens (4-1) held Rutgers to a 2-for-8 clip on free position attempts, while RU also had three shots go off the post in the contest.

The Scarlet Knights (1-3) were led offensively by junior attack Kim Kolodny (Farmingdale, N.Y.), who notched her first hat trick of the year. Senior goalie Candice Dandridge (Cherry Hill, N.J.) reset her career-high in saves for the second consecutive contest, stopping 13 Blue Hen shots.

Down 5-1 at the start of the second stanza, Rutgers rattled off back-to-back goals to open the period courtesy of Kristina Dunphey (Hillsborough, N.J.) and Amanda Turturro (Farmingdale, N.Y.), making the score 5-3.

Delaware bumped its lead back up to 8-4 later in the half with 18 minutes remaining, but the Scarlet Knights did not go away quietly. Kolodny's third goal of the day off a free position attempt at 8:13 made it a three goal game and gave Rutgers life down the stretch.

A pair of insurance goals by McKenzie Raffery to close it out eliminated the comeback opportunity, as the junior Blue Hen notched the final four Delaware goals in the game.

The Blue Hens clicked on both ends of the field in the first half, entering the halftime locker rooms up, 5-1. The Scarlet Knights were outshot, 14-8, in the period, as Dandridge made eight saves. Kolodny notched the only RU goal of the half at 5:55.

Rutgers had chances in its offensive third, but was held in check by UDel's Alex Zaugra. She stopped all three Rutgers free position attempts and received a touch of luck late in the first, when Turturro and Lauren Sbrilli (Martinsville, N.J.) went off the post on back-to-back shots.

The Scarlet Knights also had a Dunphey shot go off the post in the second half.

Rutgers is in action next at High Point Solutions Stadium on March 4 against No. 12/13 Penn. Opening draw is set for 5 p.m.
