KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - The Rutgers women's golf team, in its initial event of the spring season, carded a 319 to sit tied for 19th after the opening round of the 40-team Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic, played Sunday at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. Sophomore Christina Paulsen paced the Scarlet Knights through 18 holes, shooting a six-over par 78, tying for 51st in the 210-player field.
Freshmen Emily Mills and Tatum Jackson, playing in first and third position, respectively, both carded 80 and are tied for 75th.
Juniors Racquel Zurick and Jacquelyn Mullens comprised the rest of the Scarlet scorecard. Zurick shot 81 and is tied for 99th. Mullens posted an 89 and is tied for 180th.
North Florida is in first place after day one with a 297, one stroke better than second place Troy.
Tabbed as the largest collegiate golf tournament in the country, the Classic expanded to 40 teams and will be played for the first time in its seven-year history at Osprey Point, as well as Oak Point. The three day event concludes Tuesday. Teams will play on each course the first two rounds and after 36 holes of play, the Top 20 teams will play for the championship at the par-72, 5,964-yard course at Osprey Point on Tuesday, while teams 21-40 will play for a flight championship at the par-72, 5,901-yard course at Oak Point.
Host College of Charleston is the highest-seeded team currently ranked No. 68 in the latest Golfstat.com rankings, while Charleston Southern is the two-time defending flight champion at Oak Point. Other participating teams include: Ball State, Bethune-Cookman, Boston College, Boston University, Bucknell, Chattanooga, The Citadel, Delaware, Elon, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgetown, High Point, Illinois State, Jacksonville, Jacksonville State, Longwood, Loyola, Marshall, Presbyterian, Radford, Richmond, Samford, SCAD, Seton Hall, South Alabama, St. John's, Stetson, Towson, UNCG, USC Beaufort, U.S. Naval Academy, USC Upstate, Western Carolina, Western Kentucky and William & Mary.
